One Last Time

This year is going to be one of “last time” posts, goodbyes and looking back on 11 years of cruising this side of the pond.. After 3 weeks of lifting out, cleaning, fixing and fitting we are about to leave the amazing Rio Dulce for the last time. It has provided a safe summer home for Seminole Wind for most of the last 5 years and a bewildering number of new experiences for Terry and I.

From the first time we sailed across the bar at Livingston and into the amazing gorge that takes us up to the lake we have loved this place, far more importantly we have loved its people. We are used to a strong cruiser community, the sea brings us closer but here we have found a new family. The relationship between the locals and cruisers is the best I’ve known, one based on mutual respect, honesty and trust. Of course ther’re are bad apples but not many. The workmanship and care is outstanding, the warmth genuine and the truth is I feel quite emotional about leaving our Guatemalan friends here. Chief amongst them are Nineth and Oscar who have made Tijax Jungle Lodge and Marina our home port and safe haven. The word “Gentleman” has somehow lost its original meaning but in Oscar I have found a loyal friend, a true, gentle man and Im going to miss him more than I could ever have thought possible.

On Sunday we are all going out for a meal together, Oscar, Nineth, their families and those of us who will be leaving this year for the last time. These people are not just service providers , although they do that extremely well, they are true friends who have looked after us and our boats because they truly care.
